Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Cooperation Between the Supreme Court of the Union and the Federal Court of Australia

Nay Pyi Taw, June 16

    The Ceremony for the Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Cooperation between the Supreme Court of the Union and the Federal Court of Australia was held in Kempinski Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw, at 9:30 AM this morning.

         

    During the signing ceremony, the Hon. Htun Htun Oo, Chief Justice of the Union, delivered a speech. In the speech, he said that Myanmar Judiciary has committed to providing High Quality Justice to all citizens; that enhancing public trust in the courts is one of priorities of the Judiciary so that a series of judicial reforms has been made; that according to the Memorandum of Understanding, bilateral cooperation will create better understanding in and benefits to the judiciary of the two countries; and that ultimate attempts will be made in the Judicial Reform Process for the interests of Myanmar Judiciary and Myanmar people.

         

    Then, the Hon. James Leslie Bain ALLSOP AO, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, also delivered a speech. In the speech, he said that Federal Court of Australia has improved relations with Judicial institutions all over the globe since 1977 and it has been working in cooperation with courts of more than 50 countries; that Judicial Reform Process is a complicated one, and thus, patience and steadfast efforts are necessary; and that they will support Myanmar Judiciary for the successful achievement of its goals.

         

    After delivering the speeches, Chief Justice of the Union and Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Judicial Cooperation.

    After that, H.E. Mr. Nicholas Coppel, the Australian Ambassador to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Mr. Toily Kurbanov, Country Director of United Nations Development Programme (Myanmar) delivered remarks that included the matters relating to the judicial cooperation between the Supreme Court of the Union and the Federal Court of Australia.

         

         

    According to the MoU, the Supreme Court of the Union and the Federal Court of Australia will cooperate in setting the targets and implementation of yearly work plans aligned with Myanmar Judiciary Strategic Plan and Judicial Reform processes that are to be done in continuation.

    The signing ceremony of MoU was attended by the Chief Justice of the Union, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, Justices of the Supreme Court of the Union, Deputy Attorney General, Chief Judges of High Courts of the Regions and the States, members of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Commission for Studying, Examining, and Reviewing Legal Affairs and Special Cases, members of Judicial Affairs’ Committee of Pyithu Hluttaw, Chief executive and Principal Registrar of Federal Court of Australia, the Australian Ambassador to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Country Director of United Nations Development Programme (Myanmar), Director Generals of the Office of the Supreme Court of the Union and the Office of the Union Judiciary Supervision,   Deputy Director Generals, Directors and officials of the Supreme Court of the Union.

         

         

    After the ceremony for the signing of the “Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Cooperation”, Seminar on Leadership and Change Management and Discussion Meeting for the implementation process under the MoU were held consecutively.
